Huaneng Xiaowan Hydropower Station is a national key project, and also a landmark project for the Western Development Strategy and the West-to-East Electricity Transmission Program. As of August 22, 2010, all 6 units in Xiaowan Station, with total installed capacity of 4200MW, have all been completed and put into operation.
Xiaowan Hydropower Station has the world's first 300m high arc dam built in highly seismic region. It poses a number of world-class technical challenges such as anti-sliding stability of 5.40 million m3
talus, load relaxation during dam foundation excavation, 700m side slope, super large warehouse surface temperature and crack control, and seismic safety in 8 magnitude highly seismic region. These challenges have been addressed through proper engineering measures that were determined through technical research. General engineering principles for these issues were also summarized, which will provide a valuable reference for similar projects.
The practical experience and knowledge obtained through study on critical technical issues during construction of Xiaowan Hydropower Station are quite pioneering. This project will have a profound impact on construction of high arc dams in China and even around the world.
